Breadbin — Privacy Policy

Breadbin does not collect any personal data. It has no accounts, no advertising, no analytics, and no third-party tracking of any kind. Nothing you do in the app is reported to us, and we do not operate a server for it to report to.

The internet permission, and exactly what uses it

Breadbin does request the Android INTERNET permission. It would be easy to leave that unsaid, so here is precisely what it is for. Two features use it, and both only when you press a button:

  • Fetching ROM files. Either from the address you type in yourself, or — if you use the button that offers them — from the VICE project's public repository, which is hosted on GitHub.
  • Searching for games. The search screen queries the Internet Archive's public API and downloads the file you choose from archive.org.

Nothing else in the app opens a network connection. There is no update check, no crash reporting, no telemetry, no advertising network, and nothing at all happens over the network while a game is running.

What those third parties see

When you use either feature, your device connects directly to the Internet Archive or to GitHub. As with any web request, those services can see your IP address, roughly when you connected, and what you asked for — a search term, or the name of a file. That information goes to them, not to us, and their handling of it is governed by their own privacy policies:

Breadbin sends no identifier of its own with these requests: no account, no device ID, no advertising ID, no cookie it sets or reads.

What is stored, and where

Everything the app keeps is stored on your device:

  • your library of disks, tapes, cartridges and programs, including any changes a game has saved back to a disk;
  • any ROM files you have added;
  • your settings — video standard, joystick port, control size and transparency, sound, and which ROMs are switched on.

None of this identifies you, none of it is transmitted anywhere, and uninstalling the app deletes all of it.

One thing does leave the device, to your own account

The app opts its library and settings into Android's cloud backup and device-transfer features, so that moving to a new phone does not mean starting over. That copy goes to your Google account, under Google's terms, not to us. ROM files are deliberately excluded from it.

You can turn this off for the app in Android's own backup settings.

Children

Breadbin is not directed at children and collects nothing from anyone. It does let you download files from the Internet Archive, whose catalogue is not curated by us.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. The claim that the app collects nothing is not one we intend to revisit; if a future version were ever to transmit anything about you, this page would say so before that version shipped.
